The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is Austria’s central non-university research and science
institution. Three of the OeAW institutes are conducting research in the field of life sciences.
In collaboration with the University of Graz, Medical University Graz and the Graz University of
Technology the OeAW is founding a new Institute of Molecular and Computational Metabolism in
Graz. The Cori Institute will affiliate equally experimental and theoretical groups. By combining
experimental excellence and new methods from formal sciences, Cori will develop new approaches for
the future of metabolic research. We are now seeking an outstanding scientist and visionary leader to
serve as the
FOUNDING EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
of the CARL AND GERTY CORI INSTITUTE OF MOLECULAR AND COMPUTATIONAL
METABOLISM
The successful candidate offers excellent leadership qualities, is highly recognized and connected within
the global scientific community. He/She brings the ambition to establish the Cori Institute as a world
leading research center for computational metabolism research.
The Founding Executive Director will shape the scientific vision and strategic direction of the Cori
Institute, establish a unique and globally competitive research program and play a major role in
recruiting faculty and staff, envisioning an institute of 8-12 junior research groups in the ultimate
expansion state. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in conceptualization
of the new research building in close proximity to Graz University, which will become the home of the
Cori Institute. The Director’s position includes an internationally competitive salary, a substantial
annual research budget (personnel, consumables, investments) as well as access to the research
infrastructure of the University of Graz, Medical University Graz and the Graz University of
Technology, a vibrant research environment. Apart from the Cori Institute’s state-of-the-art research
platforms and infrastructures that will be established, various scientific facilities of the cooperating
Universities will provide a wide range of cutting-edge technologies, instrumentation, and techniques.
While the function as director of the Cori Institute is subject to evaluation and renewal every 5 years,
the successful candidate will be recruited with tenure and receive an appropriately sized team as well
as annually reoccurring resources for his/her own research program. Close collaboration in teaching
and research with the cooperating universities is intended, an association or even joint appointment
possible.
Qualifications: Candidates hold a PhD and/or MD degree and have made seminal contributions in the
field of molecular and computational metabolism relevant for cardio-metabolic, infectious and/or
malignant diseases. He/She ideally combines background and expertise from biomedical and
mathematical research areas. He/She is expected to conduct ground-breaking research that, ultimately,
leads to benefits for society. Furthermore, the successful candidate already enjoys an outstanding
international reputation among his/her colleagues. Key performance indicators for Cori Institute PIs

academic honors and awards, as well as translational impact and entrepreneurial successes. Core
resources comprise scientific and technical support for stem cell research, transgenic and infection
animal models, advanced microscopy, MS-based -omics technologies, flow cytometry and cell sorting,
next generation sequencing, and preclinical imaging, phenotyping and access to high performance
computing and big data analytics.
The OeAW pursues a non-discriminatory employment policy and values equal opportunities, as well
as diversity. Individuals from under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
